The band that would become The Greenberry Woods began in August 1987, when Matt Huseman strolled into the wrong dorm room at the University of Maryland, acoustic guitar in hand, and introduced himself to an already unpacking Ira Katz. The two struck up a friendship rooted in music and initially fueled by Ira’s determination to learn guitar. They quickly discovered they harmonized well and eventually talked about starting a band. It just so happened that Matt’s twin brother Brandt, studying at nearby George Mason, played bass and was a natural harmonic fit. The three of them got together around December 1989, recording six originals to cassette during their first practice. In short order, GBW started to gig regularly in Washington D.C. and Baltimore, bringing “power pop” to audiences who were often surprised to discover how much they liked it. The band was generating buzz and had become a tight live group, and in late 1992, The Greenberry Woods showcased for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame record company executive Seymour Stein at Kenny’s Castaway’s in Greenwich Village. The band was signed immediately after the show.
